It’s a common strategy for a VPN – to market itself as one of the most secure VPNs, making exaggerated claims and promises. But the truth is – VPN security is becoming more and more attainable with every year, and empty promises won’t make it anymore.

The cornerstone of VPN security is encryption. With encryption, nobody will be able to understand information you send, even if they get their hands on it. As of now, VPN safety often relies on the same encryption, all my competitors have AES-256 bit encryption as an option, and it’s a golden standard of security. However, when using the Lightway protocol, ExpressVPN resorts to the ChaCha20 cipher and so does Surfshark and PIA with WireGuard and even NordVPN with NordLynx. The main difference here is that ChaCha20 works better with low-performance mobile devices and it’s essentially more secure and future-proof.

Out of all the choices, NordVPN is the safest one – it has plenty of security features and is reliable in terms of privacy and infrastructure. Surfshark is almost on the same level, slightly missing on some features, but overall just as private. PIA and ExpressVPN are both decent options, they clearly have the features and infrastructure necessary to keep you safe, as long as you are willing to overlook the shady past of their owner company.
